Children are allowed to go to primary school in the Netherlands starting at the age of 4 years old. When children turn 5 years old, they have to go to school, because they have leerplicht. This is compulsory ('leerplicht'). All children in the Netherlands have the right to receive education. Most children don't have problems with the lessons at school. But not every child is the same. Sometimes additional help is needed, or a child needs extra practice. Sometimes a child needs different explanations or teaching materials. At times, they need education at another, special school.
This brochure tries to answer as many questions as possible that parents might have about passend onderwijs (tailored education) at primary schools in the Netherlands.
